“Have fun with the tasks!”

From trainee to manager in Neuss - Nadine Möller on leadership, learning and learning curves.

The cornerstone of her career at Rieck 21 years ago was her training as a freight forwarding and logistics services clerk. Nadine Möller moved to Rieck Entsorgungs-Logistik in Neuss in 2016. Less than four years later, she took over as Head of Logistics and was also given power of attorney. The next step was sole responsibility for transport management in 2023. For the past year, the 38-year-old has been responsible for the operational management of Rieck Entsorgungs-Logistik.

Looking back over the past twelve months, what were the most important projects for you?

One of the aims of the new role was to improve operational processes and to act as a link between business and department management. In addition, the focus was on further expanding the destruction goods division and recruiting new specialist staff and professional drivers. There is certainly still a lot to do, but so far we have been able to achieve our goals.

What were the biggest challenges in your first year as a manager and what experiences helped you?

It makes a difference whether you are responsible for four employees or almost 70. Every employee has different needs and concerns that have to be taken into account individually. It has helped me a lot that I have already had management responsibility on a smaller scale, have held staff appraisals and know the company so well. Another important part of my job is planning and organizing – something I learned during my training.

Previously you were responsible for logistics, now for waste disposal. How did you find your feet here?

The topic of waste had also been with me in my previous position, but not as intensively. It required a lot of brainpower and intensive coaching from our Managing Director Daniel Gartmann. We talk to each other every day, give each other updates on the issues that arise on a daily basis and have become a real unit. In his absence, I stand in for him – I see that as a great vote of confidence.

"At Rieck, you don't go under, but stand out if you get involved and internalize 'blue and yellow'."

How would you describe your management style?

Cooperative with open communication and honest feedback. I have always believed that a management style at eye level with mutual respect and a dose of humor is more successful than running through the company with a crowbar. The Rieck “Fit for Future” program has also given me a lot of additional impetus that I have been able to apply.

What developments do you currently see in the waste disposal logistics market?

One of the absolute future topics is complete battery logistics. The topic of product destruction – also for and with customs – is becoming an increasingly important and major issue.

What career tip would you give to young colleagues who are now starting at Rieck?

At Rieck, you are not one of millions. Strengths are recognized and encouraged here. Be open to new things, even if it seems like a huge challenge at first. Always contribute your ideas, communicate freely, be creative. Think outside the box and have fun with your tasks. With a little hard work, the rest will (almost) come naturally.

Finally, a private question: What’s your favorite way to wind down after a busy day at work?

I love being in the kitchen and cooking something delicious. It brings me completely down and I find peace. I also like to be creative or cook according to grandma’s old recipes. I also like sitting in my garden, meeting friends and just relaxing at the end of the day.
