Press release: IDS converts CFP calculation to new ISO 14083 standard

Published on 23.07.2025

Kleinostheim, July 23, 2025 – IDS Logistik has completely converted its calculation of the carbon footprint (CFP) to the current ISO 14083 standard. Since July 15, 2024, emissions have been calculated on the basis of the EcoTransIT World software, which is considered the market standard for transport emissions calculations. IDS is thus strengthening the transparency, accuracy and sustainability of its CO₂ accounting – a key component in achieving its ambitious climate targets.

IDS already communicated its reduction targets on the road to climate neutrality last year. The aim is to significantly reduce transport and handling-related emissions, calculated as a percentage compared to the base year 2023 per tonne-kilometer: The plan is to reduce them by 21 percent by 2030 and by 60 percent by 2040. IDS then aims to achieve its goal of net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. The basis for pursuing this target is a reliable, standardized emissions calculation – at consignment level, automated and in line with standards.

Automated calculation with EcoTransIT World and REff tool
Since the go-live of the new calculation methodology, the transport and handling emissions of all national general cargo shipments in the IDS network have been calculated fully automatically every night. All sections of the transport chain – including pre-carriage, main leg and onward carriage as well as all transhipments – are taken into account.

The calculation is based on two central components:

  • EcoTransIT World (ETW): An ISO 14083-certified tool for determining transportation emissions. Both primary data (specific transport data) and default values (statistical average values) are used.

  • REff tool from the Fraunhofer Institute: For calculating the handling emissions, taking into account the actual energy consumption of the IDS terminals.

Full transparency – retroactively from 2023
As the year 2023 was defined as the reference basis for the emission targets, IDS has retroactively evaluated all shipments according to the new methodology. The results for 2023 and 2024 are now available and serve as reference values for the long-term monitoring of CO₂ reduction targets.

Continuous further development
The aim is to continuously improve the CFP calculation. For example, the default values are to be continuously replaced by primary data such as vehicle type, drive type or capacity utilization, so that the effects of measures such as the first BEV HUB main runs, which will start in 2025, are reflected in the CFP calculation. Work is also underway to include events such as the second delivery or forwarding of a consignment in the calculation.

“Because you can only manage what you measure. Daily standard-compliant CFP measurement is the basis of our climate strategy up to 2050, and with it we are setting a standard for transparency and reliability in general cargo logistics,” explains IDS Managing Director Michael Bargl.
